Born to a Karoo farming family and raised initially on the Camdeboo plains, Leanne became an experienced rider at an early age and was riding in her first Endurance event by 11.

At the age of 16 she was appointed Captain of the Junior South African Endurance team, where she earned her junior Springbok colours and in 2009 was appointed Captain of the South African senior endurance team for the challenge in New Zealand, which she led to victory there and at the return challenge in South Africa.

To date Leanne has ridden more than 10,000 kilometres in endurance competition.

During her life on the Karoo she has studiously acquired an extensive knowledge of the husbandry of horses and the ability to selectively determine bloodlines in the breeding programme of her stable. This knowledge being enhanced further by a period spent in England where she worked at several prestige stables.

Strongly represented by Arab bloodlines the focus at the Welbech Stud is on developing strength and stamina by combining the hardiness of the Karoo with pure Arab blood to produce high calibre horses.

It is Leanne's dream that the Welbech Stud and its Endurance Team will become the pre-eminent Endurance stable in South Africa with its protégée eventing both here and internationally.
